Time Remaining Until Eid al-Adha
Why Do We Offer a Sacrifice?
The Udhiyah (sacrificial offering) is one of the Islamic rituals through which Muslims draw closer to Allah by sacrificing livestock during the first days of Eid al-Adha. It begins immediately after the Eid prayer on the first day and continues until the end of the Days of Tashreeq. It is a confirmed Sunnah (tradition of the Prophet).
How Is the Sacrifice Divided?
It is recommended to divide the meat of the sacrifice into thirds: one third for personal consumption, one third as a gift, and one third to be given in charity.
Who Offers the Sacrifice?
One sacrifice suffices for a single household. It is sufficient for the person offering the sacrifice to do so on behalf of themselves and their household with one sheep. It is also permissible to offer larger animals such as cows or camels. Up to seven people may share in one cow or camel, offering it collectively on their behalf.
The Virtue and Reward of the Sacrifice
The sacrifice carries many virtues, foremost of which is that it is one of the great symbols of Allah. Offering a sacrifice to Allah and drawing near to Him with such offerings is among the greatest acts of worship. The reward for this deed is immense—Allah forgives all sins at the first drop of the animal’s blood.
